Food additives get a lot of bad press but they have been around for years. As innovation and the need for a long shelf has increased, so has the use of food additives.

This blog looks at what Food Additives are, why they are commonly used in the food production process and where food producers can access a list of food additives to use in their manufacturing process.

Food Additives

According to the FSA, Food additives are simply the “ingredients that are added to foods to carry out particular functions.”

Food manufacturers use them for two main reasons:

  • In order to extend the shelf life of their products
  • To improve the taste or texture of their products

To do so, food producers may use one of the following types of Food Additives:

  • Preservatives
  • Nutritional Additives
  • Colouring Agents
  • Flavouring Agents
  • Texturing Agents
  • Miscellaneous Agents

The complete list of approved additives by the FSA can be found here.

NotaZone enables food producers to use its inventory management platform to record recipes, allergens and additives easily to provide complete traceability.
